Blades
The surname Blades means either "a maker of blades; a blacksmith," from Blades, " the latters being the name of an unidentified place." An early record example of this surname is from Yorkshire, England, in 1460 when a Robert Blades is mentioned. The next account we have is of Edward Alvin Franklin Blades, who was born in North Carolina in 1780 and who moved with his wife, Ellen Penelope Maynard Blades , who was born in North Carolina in the late 1700’s, to Monroe County, Tennessee where Edward Blades Jr was born in in 1821. In 1836 Edward, taking about two months, transported his family to Greene County, Missouri, by ox team. They located on Pickeral Creek by a large spring, on land granted by the government. Later he purchased 480 more acres ranging in price from $.50 to $2.50 an acre.
Edward Sr was the father of sixteen Children. Four were by another wife and must have stayed in NC or TN. Benjamin Blades was an early settler in De Kalb County, Tennessee. Edward Alvin Franklin Blades Sr, of English decent, was born in NC and died in Greene County, Missouri in 1844. His wife, Ellen Penelope Maynard, was born Aug 8, 1801; died in abt. 1858. Both are buried in what is known as the Reynolds Cemetery, on the Bill Hood farm. One child, Rebecca Blades Batson, is also buried there. There were 16 children, but apparently the first four were married and stayed in NC or TN. Edward Alvin Franklin and his wife Ellen Penelope came to Greene County, Missouri with their family from McMinn or Monroe County, Tennessee, in 1836, and settled on section ten, township twenty-eight, range twenty- four. Their son-in-law Billy McDaniel settled section eleven. David Reynolds was the first settler in Pond Creek Township and settled on section two, now owned by Bill Hood. Robert Batson settled section three, in 1840. Samuel Garoutte, father-in-law of Dudley Blades settled section 27. Dudley built the first school house in Pond Creek Township, in the northwest corner of his father’s farm. It was a log building fourteen feet by fifteen feet and Robert Batson was the first teacher. Steve Batson and William B Garoutte also taught there. The first church was called Bethel, burned May, 1872. The first child born was William Blades. I would like to call to your attention, to the fact, that at that time there were only six families in Pond Creek Township. Reynolds, Blades, Garoutte, Batson and Skelton which seems to account for the marriage pattern.

Pond Creek Township
David Reynolds was the first settler of Pond Creek Township. He came from East Tennessee in 1834 and settled on section two of township twenty-eight, range twenty-four. Edward Blades, the father of Ransom Dudley Blades, settled on section ten in the year 1836. He was a native of North Carolina, but emigrated to Missouri from McCain County, East Tennessee. William McDaniel, a son-in-law of Edward Blades, settled in 1836, on section ten, coming at the same time with Blades. (Edward Blades settled near a spring on Pickeral Creek, where Walter Blades now lives, 1982.) Robert Batson settled on section three in 1840. Robert Batson is the father of Nathaniel Batson. Robert Batson was born in New Jersey but removed to PA. and married Mary Mount. In 1840 they came to MO. Their son Nathaniel married Nancy C Hughes, daughter of James Hughes and Jane Stockton. The first school taught in this township was by Robert Batson in a private house built by Ransom Dudley Blades on his fathers place. Stephen Batson also taught in the township as did William B Garoutte. Stephen Batson came from Ohio in 1842 and lived on Pickeral near the south line of the county. G W Britain emigrated to Missouri in 1833 or 1834, first settled ten miles west of Springfield and afterward came to Pond Creek Township. Samuel Garoutte emigrated from Greene County, Tennessee, to Gasconade County, Missouri, and after living there perhaps ten or fifteen years came to Pond Creek in 1837, and located on section twenty-seven. Anthony Garoutte came from Ohio in 1838. James Garoutte came about the same time. They all descended from an old soldier of the revolution who came over with the French troops to assist in securing the independence of America. After the war was over, remained in this country, and settled in New Jersey whence his descendants have emigrated west. Michael Garoutte was a Frenchman who came over to America in the time of the revolution and was one of the French soldiers who aided in securing American Independence. He made his home at Tuckahoe, New Jersey, an old seaport town near the Atlantic. Ransom Dudley Blades is the oldest settler now living in Pond Creek Township, with the exception of one other. He was born in McCain County, East Tennessee, Jan 29 1821. He came to Greene County in 1836 and is now one of the thrifty farmers and representative citizens of the southwest part of the county. His father Edward A Blades moved from North Carolina to Tennessee about 1815, and settled in McCain County. He had been married in North Carolina to Ellen Maynard but no children had been born at the time of removal to Tennessee. The second child and oldest was Ransom Dudley Blades. In 1836, when he was fifteen years of age, the family come to Greene County Missouri, and settled on section ten of township twenty-eight range twenty-four. The southwest part of the county was at that time almost without inhabitants. At the same time with the Blades came William McDaniel. Some of the Reynolds were also living in the township, and for upwards of a year these three families were the only residents of what is now known as Pond Creek Township. In the direction of Springfield no settlement had been nearer than within two miles of the town. Four miles north a couple of families resided, but in a southwest direction no one was living for a distance of forty miles. His father built a rude log cabin, put a small quantity of land under cultivation and it was amid but few of the conveniences of modern civilization. A considerable part of the grinding of their corn for bread was done with the old-fashioned pestle, which was every where in use, and when they did go to the mill, they found much a convenience only at a distance of from eight to forty miles from home. The nearest blacksmith shop was fourteen miles in the direction of Springfield. Such facts are in strange contrast to the convinces and comforts of the present day, and no one except those who experienced them can realize the trouble and inconvience to which the earlest settlers were subject.
Previous to coming to Missouri, Mr Blades education had consisted of
a month and half of schooling with which he had been favored among the
hills of East Tennessee. Of course, such a state of society as we have
referred to admitted of no such luxuries as schools, and his education
has accordingly been acquired by his own efforts. In April 1841, he was
married to Frances Garoutte, daughter of Samuel Garoutte. Her grandfather
was a Frenchman who came over with the French troops to America at the
time of the Revolutionary War. Her father was born at the town of Tuckahoe,
in the southern part of New Jersey, where her grandfather had settled at
the conculsion of the Revolution. Samuel Garoutte moved from, New Jersey
to Tennessee, from there to Gasconade County, Missouri, where his daughter
Frances was born, and after living there ten or fifteen years, moved to
the southwest part of Greene County in 1838. After his marriage, Mr Blades
next step was to begin farming on his own account on his present farm in
section twenty-eight, of township eight, range twenty-four. He began his
career as a farmer without any capital, his wordly goods including his
team and other necessary property, amounting to not more than sixty-dollars
in cash, at the time he went to housekeeping. He located on some government
land, and as soon as he was able, entered a tract which composes a poprtion
of his present farm. He was, however, full of energy, and equal to hard
work, and has now become one of the leading farmers of Pond Creek Township,
and the proprietor of a solid section of land (640 acres), of which between
three and four hundred acres are under cultivation. His first wife departed
this life on March 17, 1863. She was the mother of eleven children, of
whom all, with one exception, are now living and of whom seven are married.
His second marriage was on June 14, 1863 to Mrs Gille S Davis. Her maiden
name was Gillie S Williams. She was born in what is now Lawrence County,
Missouri, where her father, Samuel Williams, had settled in 1831, moving
to Missouri from East Tennessee. Her first husband was William Davis, of
Lawrence County, who was killed by rebel bushwackers in 1862. Her father,
Samuel Williams, was born in East Tennessee, was bought up in middle Tennessee,
is what is now Lawrence County, then Crawford County. To him belongs the
distinction of being the first settler west of Springfield, at the time
of his settlement on Spring River, no improvement having been made between
him and Springfield. He brought a whip saw with him from Tennessee. Such
implements were scarce at that time in southwest Missouri, and his Springield
neighbors borrowed it to saw out clap boards and flooring used in the construction
of some of the first houses ever erected in Springfield. Gillie S Williams
(Now Mrs Blades) was in all probability the first white child ever born
within the limits of what is now Lawrence County. Her mother lived
three months on Spring River without seeing the face of a white man , and
for eight months without beholding a white woman. Although during the same
period her eyes rested on thousands of roving Indians. Before the
late war Mr Blades had been a Democrat, His first vote for President of
the United States was cast for Martin Van Buren in 1840, at a time when
he was yet under age --- voting under age being a circumstance which not
unfrequently happened in those days. He continued to vote the Democratic
ticket
up to the time of war. When the rebellion arose, he was strongly opposed
to secession, and became an outspoken Union Man. The winter of 1861-62
he was obliged to spend in Kansas on account of his well known Union sentiments,
the Confederates at that time having control of the country. He voted for
Lincoln in 1864, and had since acted with the Republican party. For twenty
years he has been a member of the Methodist Episopal Church, and is a citizen
respected wherever known. It is sufficient to say of him that his character
has reflected credit on the community that he has been a peaceable and
law-abiding citizen, being on good terms with his neighbors, that he has
never been arrested for any crime or misdemeanor, or in any way brought
under the notice or penalty of the law.
Warren Werter Garoutte married Martha Richmond, daughter of John S Richmond. John S Richmond moved from East Tennessee to Lawrence County, Missouri, 1835. Greene County was organized Jan 2, 1833 and named in honor of General Nathanial Geene, one of the leading American officers in the Revolutionary War. Its limits then embraced nearly all the state south of the Osage River and west of Phelps County. The Delaware, Kickapoo,and Osage Indians formerly inhabited this portion of Missouri. In 1870 there were 868 white, 14 black, 251 horses and 50 mules in Pond Creek Township. Thomas and Recbecca (Britain) McDaniel, native of Jefferson County , Tennessee, moved to Greene County, Missouri in 1836 with their family. Thomas was a soldier in the war of 1812 and was with General Jackson at the battle of New Orleans.
William McDaniel a son married Sarah Blades of McMinn County, Tennessee,
on Aug. 28, 1836. They were blessed with 10 children; Jackson [being the
first white child born in Pond Creek Township], John Wesley, Rebecca Eleanor,
James Caleb, Jesse Whorton, Ransom Tilman, Elijah Alexander, William Henderson,
Henderson Clayborn, and Sarah Jane. (Ransom Tilman was the father of Ava
Garoutte, grandfather of Dollie [Garoutte] Foust, and the great grandparent
of Lora Lee, JoAnn, and Mary Sue). William and his family bought a fine
farm of 240 acres in Pond Creek Township, which he continuously improved
over his lifetime. At that time the area was very sparsely settled and
away from any settlement that provided needed services, so all the family’s
milling had to be hauled forty miles south by ox team, a weeks trip.

WILLIAM McDANIEL.
This gentleman is the son of Thomas and Rebecca (Britain) ,McDaniel, and was born in Jefferson County Tennessee, June 23, 1810. His father was a soldier of the war of 1812, and was with Gen. Jackson at the battle of New Orleans. In 1818 they moved to Roane County, Tennessee, and in 1821 they again moved to McMinn County and lived there and in Monroe County until 1836, when he came to Greene County, Missouri, and settled in Pond Creek Township. When he came, there was but one man living in the township, David Reynolds. He has passed through all the experiences, hardships and excitement of pioneer life. He had his milling done forty miles south of him, taking a week to make the trip with an ox team. He settled the place upon which he now lives in 1838, and improved a fine farm of two hundred and forty acres. He reared a large family. Four of his sons were, in the Union army, and one rose to the rank of captain. Mr. McDaniel has been a member of the Methodist church, for over forty years, part of the time class-leader. He was rnarried August 28, 1836, to Miss Sarah A., daughter of Edward and Penelope (Maynard) Blades, of McMinn County, Tennessee. Her parents were originally from North Carolina, and came from Tennessee at the same time, 1836, and settled in Pond Creek township. Mr. and Mrs. McDaniel were blest with ten children, nine of whom are living: Jackson, John W., James C., Jesse W., Ransom T., Elijah A., William, Henderson C., and Sarah J. M.

Mr. McDaniel is the son of William and Sarah A. (Blades) McDaniel, and was born in Greene County, MO., March 21, 1839. His parents were native of Tennessee, and his grandfather was a soldier in the war of 1812. His father was one of the pioneers of Greene County, and when he settled in Pond Creek Township, there was but one other family, that of David Reynolds, in that part of the county. John W. grew to manhood upon the farm and has always followed that occupation, being very successful and owning two well improved farms, and half interest in a tract of mining land. In 1861 he enlisted in Phelp’s regiment and served out his time of six months, and at the organization of Capt. Referan’s company of militia, in 1862, he was appointed first lieutenant, and was afterward promoted captain, serving with that rank until the end of the war, doing efficient service for the government in Southwest Missouri, in scouting, etc. He is a member of the Methodist Church, and is one of Center’s best citizens. He Married July 3, 1866, to Miss Sarah Virginia C., daughter of Silas and Jane Ray of this County, formerly of Tennessee. This gentleman is the son of Robert and Mary (Mount) Batson, and was born in Clinton County, Ohio, December 20, 1921, His father was a native of New Jersey and his mother of Pennsylvania, in which State they were married. Nathaniel was the second of a family of eleven children, and when he was about three years of age his parents moved back to Greene County, PA., where they remained until 1833, when they returned to Clinton County, Ohio. In the fall of 1840 the Batson moved to Missouri, and located in Greene County, in the northern part of Pond Creek Township. Nathaniel lived with his father until he was twenty-five years of age and then he married to Miss Nancy C., daughter of James and Jane (Stockton) Hughes. She was born in Rhea County, Tennessee, November 14, 1829. When she was four years of age her parents moved to Alabama, and in 1844 they moved to Greene County, Missouri. Her father was a soldier in the Mexican War and also in the Union Army in the Civil War. He died from wounds received at the Battle if Pea Ridge, Arkansas. He served his country in two great wars, and at last met a soldier’s death. Mr Batson has always followed farming, and is one of the most successful and substantial farmers in Greene County. He owns a finely improved farm of five hundred forty acres. He had four sons in the Union Army, one of whom died in the service. Mr and Mrs Batson were blest with nine children, eight of whom are, Malina, Isaac, Abner B, James M, George W, Nathaniel L. H., Sarah L. G., and C. David).
